Dietary fiber consists of carbohydrates that, when ingested, can affect the gastrointestinal tract in various ways. It is a fiber-rich component of many plant species and cannot be broken down enzymatically in humans. In carnivorous animals, this is possible to a limited extent. As a result, it reaches the large intestine virtually unchanged, where it is broken down by bacteria.
How is dietary fiber classified?
What is inulin?
One of the best-known soluble fibers is inulin. It is a polysaccharide composed of fructose molecules, found primarily in Jerusalem artichoke tubers, chicory, and artichokes. Inulin is a prebiotic, meaning it is a molecule that serves as food for gut bacteria and promotes their growth. It can positively influence digestion by increasing the volume of intestinal contents and enhancing the feeling of fullness.
